Smoothies are my go-to morning beverage/meal. I was such an ice cream/milkshake fiend as a kid so this is the healthiest way for me to indulge and feel like a kid again. There is nothing like enjoying a delicious sweet frozen beverage while getting key vitamins and nutrients.
I guarantee this will make it a lot easier to drop the morning expensive Starbucks coffee addiction. You'll have more nutrition, more energy, feel fuller, and save money. Save the coffee and tea for where it is free at work or cheaper at home.
I rotate between two different types of smoothies - a banana blueberry flavor and a chocolate peanut butter cup flavor. Both feature a serving's worth of greens. No better way to hide some nutrition than in a delicious shake. Here are the recipes.
Banana Blueberry Smoothie
- 1 cup water (or milk of your choice)
- 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
- 1 frozen banana
- 1/2 cup packed fresh spinach or juicing greens combo (kale, beet greens, etc.)
- 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Put in a high powered blender (like a Vitamix) and blend until smooth. Best served in a cup with a straw. The vinegar/vanilla combo may sound weird but it actually boosts flavor in a balanced way so give it a try.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie
- 1 cup water (or milk of your choice)
- 1/4 cup ice cubes
- 1 frozen banana
- 1/2 cup packed fresh spinach or juicing greens combo (kale, beet greens, etc.)
- 2 tablespoons dried peanut butter powder (or substitute with natural peanut butter)
- 1-2 teaspoons sugar
- 1-2 teaspoons cocoa powder
Put in a high powered blender (like a Vitamix) and blend until smooth. Best served in a cup with a straw. Play with the sugar and cocoa powder combo that suits your preference. I personally like both a little on the heavier side, maybe 1.5 teaspoons of each but I'm lazy and just pour right into the blender without measuring.
